SMSC/British Values at Catherine Infant School

  • SMSC and British values are implemented through our school's high expectations for respectful behaviour and good manners in our whole school community.
  • SMSC and British values aren’t taught in isolation, instead it is linked to everything the school does, our ethos and attitude.
  • Catherine Infant School is a diverse community welcoming people from all over the world. With over 34 languages from a variety of cultures spoken within our school, we ensure that we celebrate and share different cultural and spiritual events and celebrations such as Navratri, Diwali, Harvest, Eid, Vaisakhi, Christmas, Easter, and Chinese New Year.
  • Through our curriculum, our beliefs and our school values, pupils learn to live together, to respect each other's cultures and beliefs and are prepared for life in modern Britain.

APPROACH

EYFS

In EYFS, SMSC and British values are embedded into all areas of learning. To support pupils’ social development, we support their transition from Nursery into Reception, promoting positive relationships with peers and teachers. We do this by encouraging partner talk, group work, and developing speaking and listening skills. We support pupils’ moral development by following the school’s Golden Rules which are displayed in every class and discussed with pupils daily. We also promote learning environments that allow for choice and moral decision making. To support pupils’ cultural and spiritual development we promote acceptance and sensitivity to all cultures and beliefs by sharing experiences, celebrations, and having visitors from different faiths and cultures.

KS1

In KS1, SMSC and British values are also embedded into all our learning. We explore democracy through pupils evaluating their own work and their peer’s work. Pupils are encouraged to make decisions in both groups and independently and are encouraged to see their role in the bigger picture e.g., as part of a class, school, family, community, county. We explore the rule of law through teaching the school rules which are also displayed in all classrooms. Our assemblies support our teaching of the school rules and behaviour expectations, we teach the understanding of right and wrong through stories and topics and linked to feelings. Individual liberty is explored by encouraging pupils to understand being responsible for their own actions and property, as well as the property of others. We also encourage pupils to walk sensibly around school, understanding how they can help each other to make our school a safer place. Mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs is explored by visits to local places of worship and places in our local area. Pupils learn about many special events, cultural festivals and celebrations throughout the year which are also taught through PSHE and RE.

WIDER OPPORTUNITIES

We provide our pupils with opportunities to learn about different cultural and spiritual events and celebrations such as Navratri, Diwali, Harvest, Eid, Vaisakhi, Christmas, Easter, and Chinese New Year. Year 1 and year 2 attend school trips to visit different places of worship in our local community such as visiting the Gurdwara and Mosque. We also provide other opportunities for trips such as the Year 1 visit to Attenborough Arts and Reception visit by Wonderdome Planetarium. We plan our trips and WOW days to support our pupils’ overall development, helping them to learn to work together, respect each other's and provide life experiences that will set them up to live a safe and happy life in modern Britain.
