ROUTE TO RESILIENCE

WHAT IS ROUTE TO RESILIENCE?

Route to Resilience is an evidence based, practical approach to supporting emotional well-being by building resilience and character in pupils. It encourages pupils to recognise and develop character traits that make them unique and then use them to be the best version of themselves. At the heart of Route of Resilience is creating a culture in which pupils are given every opportunity to strengthen their sense of self so that they are equipped to take on new challenges and have confidence in their abilities.

OUR CHARACTER MUSCLES

At Catherine Infant School we have chosen 19 character words which will be introduced and strengthened throughout the school year. The character words represent positive character attributes that enable pupils to become life-long learners and well-rounded, confident individuals.  The character words are referred to as ‘character muscles’ by pupils and staff as this emphasises that we each possesses a full range of these characteristics and through conscious exercise and focus they can be made stronger.

Catherine Infant School’s chosen character muscles are:

Resilience        Friendship
  Creativity    Confidence
Self-esteem   Curiosity   Love of Learning
  Kindness   Courage
Perseverance   Respect   Motivation
   Teamwork   Optimism
Appreciation   Enthusiasm   Communication
     Gratitude    Independence

WHAT DOES ROUTE TO RESILIENCE LOOK LIKE IN OUR SCHOOL?

Every two weeks, the pupils and the staff are introduced to a new character muscle word during our Thursday Route to Resilience assembly. During the assembly, the character muscle is explained to pupils and how it can be utilised and strengthened at school and at home. Each week, teacher select pupils to award Routes to Resilience certificates to celebrate their achievements and effort in demonstrating/using their character muscles.

The character muscle of the week is displayed in all classrooms and in communal areas around the school to allow pupils and staff to build familiarity with the word. It is referred to explicitly during lessons, activities, play times, lunch times and after school clubs to enable pupils to recognise and understand the importance of their character muscles.

The Route to Resilience display within each classroom grows with the pupils throughout the year as each new character muscle is introduced. At the end of the year the pupils and staff are able to see how all of the character muscles have been utilised and how they have helped them to become the best version of themselves.

HOW ARE WE BUILDING PUPILS' RESILIENCE?

The character muscle words are embedded throughout the school and pupils are filled with excitement to showcase their character muscles in their work, spoken language and outside of school. Each character muscle is transferable to all areas of school and life and our pupils are always eager to apply their character muscles to different areas of their learning.
