Topic Based Curriculum
At Catherine Infant School our Topic based curriculum includes Art, D & T, Geography, History and RE. Topic is taught in the afternoons. Pupils study either History or Geography each half term. Our topics are always based around a question, for example "Where would you like to live, England or India?", "Who is Vincent Van Gogh?" and "Are you as brave as Neil Armstrong?" Over the school year pupils experience a broad and balanced programme of study. Pupils are encouraged to talk and question about their learning, to establish links between different subject areas and topics and to apply skills learnt from one area to their learning in other areas. Our pupils show a great appetite for learning, they love to discuss their work and are always pleased to learn new vocabulary and language linked to their topic learning. They are always looking for challenge in their learning. Our pupils apply themselves enthusiastically in all areas of the curriculum. Pupils complete home learning to support and develop learning at school. Families support our pupils through practical and written home learning activities.
To introduce the children to the best of Belgrave, the children participated in a carousel of activities. They tried different types of food that were available in Belgrave, made jewellery that they see in Belgrave, used different paint techniques to create fireworks that they see in Belgrave during the festive seasons, learnt an Indian dance and were taught how to play on the dhol drums.
